At the age of 18, Djokovic cracked the top 100 of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and he won his first ATP tournament in July of 2006.
In 2007, he reached the semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon before losing in straight sets to Roger Federer in the finals of the U.S. Open.
In 2008, Djokovic continued his impressive form by becoming the first Serbian man to win one of tennis's four most prestigious singles championships at the Australian Open. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, he placed in the bronze medal event.
At the Australian Open in 2020, he won his 17th Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon 2021, Djokovic defeated Márton Fucsovics for his 100th grass-court win.
Tennis Australia and the Department of Health of the state government of Victoria awarded Djokovic one of the rare medical exemptions from the required COVID-19 immunisation for the Australian Open competition in January 2022.
He left for Melbourne on January 5, but the Australian Border Force stopped him because they found he did not comply with the entrance rules for unvaccinated travellers.
His visa was revoked, and he spent several days lodged in an immigration detention hotel as he awaited a court date. Djokovic's exemption was based on a positive COVID-19 test he had on December 16, 2021, which was later made public. Djokovic said he found out about the positive test on December 17, and he admitted that he didn't go into seclusion after that. Instead, he did an interview and a photo shoot.
The Federal Circuit Court and the Family Court issued their decisions in favour of Djokovic on January 10, ordering his release and awarding costs.
