He took part in the Davis Cup during that time, winning the 2004 trophy for Spain by defeating Andy Roddick 3-2 in the championship match. He broke Andre Agassi's record for the most consecutive victories on clay by winning 24 straight games.
In 2005, when Nadal won the French Open for the first time, he was 19 years old, and his world ranking rose to No. 3 as a result. That year, Nadal won 11 singles titles. Eight of them were on clay, so people started calling him the "King of Clay."
Rafael also won competitions including the Rome Masters, the Monte Carlo Masters, and the Torneo Conde de Godó in Barcelona. But his biggest victory came when he defeated Argentinean star Mariano Puerta in the "French Open" championship match.
Nadal's foot issue prevented him from playing in the Australian Open. His debut tournament was the Open 13 tournament in Marseille, France, in February, where he was eliminated in the semifinals. He beat Roger Federer in the Dubai Duty-Free Men's Open final two weeks later.
